I first saw the above image in a briefing on FIST by Dan Ward. It struck me as very important at the time (and still does) as a metaphor for how open source can make the transition to hardware (open design). In open source software development, often the participants need only be connected virtually. Everyone has a computer they use for development or testing, and they can communicate and collaborate over internet services (web forums, mailing lists, code repositories, wikis, etc). (more…)

Another brain dump of ideas and topics based on today’s discussions; phew what a day:
- Need charts added to “repository”
- Cost/schedule/performance/motivation/concept/soluition Quad chart
- Ven Diagram: non-profit, open source, space community
- Who is the Mach 30 User community? How can they get involved?
- Open-source orbital design software = Celestia
- Manufacturing capability (surge capacity)
- by locting near other like-minded and similarly skilled individuals (SoCal).
- similar to Applid Minds <–> Industrial light and magic (more…)
